14.3. I used my subjects’ heads to block most of the rays, keeping the hazy feel without any halos.

A variation of this technique is to crop but not block. In other words, crop the light source out of the frame. The light source, your subjects, and you no longer have to be lined up with each other, but you are still benefiting from that warm hazy light. For better understanding, let’s look at some examples.

Image 14.4 was taken with a wide-angle lens. Here, I did not block or crop. The image is still beautiful and moody, but the lens flare is large and distracting. Also, the sun is the brightest part of the image, instead of my subjects. To add some contrast, I used Photoshop to crop out the sun (14.5). With the halos cropped out, the sun illuminates my subjects beautifully without overpowering them, and just the right amount of contrast is added.
